Fairness Factor

Expecting the world to treat you fairly because you are good is like expecting the bull not to charge because you’re a vegetarian. ~ Dennis Wholey

I was in my bosses office today and a piece of paper floated off his desk and towards the floor. As I reached down to pick it up, my eyes fell on the quote above and it made me think a little bit about goodness and fairness and the disconnect between the two. In truth, fairness is a great concept that rarely plays out. It’s an ideal; a goal; something to shoot for but, it’s not a given. I really don’t have much else to say except, do good but don’t do it because you expect goodness and fairness in return. Life just doesn’t work that way. Understanding that will save you a lot of disappointment in the long run.

Here’s to treating all people the way you want to be treated without expecting anything in return.
