There are moments, like today, when I remember very clearly why I love Southern California. Sitting on my front porch with a crisp glass of wine, watching giant ships steaming into the harbor and sailboats dotting the water for as far as the eye can see, what can be better? When summer breaks and the temperatures climb, all thoughts of doom and gloom pretty much vanish. It’s almost like God throws open the curtains of Heaven and lets me get a little peak at just how brilliant it will be.
Sitting on my front porch a song begins to waft through my mind. Pretty soon I see the image of a beautiful African American young lady, barefoot and kneeling on a stage singing
Summertime, and the livin’ is easy.
Fish are jumpin’ and the cotton is high.
Oh! Your Daddy’s rich and your Ma is good lookin’.
So, hush little baby, don’t you cry…
One of these mornin’s you’re gonna rise up singin’.
Then you’ll spread your wings, and you’ll take the sky.
But ’till that mornin’ there’s nothin’ can harm you,
with Daddy and Momma standin’ by… *
Aren’t you glad that God gives us little glimpses of Heaven to brighten our world?! We need these days of summertime when the “livin’ is easy!” The road of life if often “fraught with peril” as my grandmother says. There have been a lot of days recently when all the fight just seems to go right out of me. Days that are dark and gloomy, where you just want to curl up under the covers and never come out. But just when things get their darkest, God seems to look down and say,
“my boy needs a little sunshine, a little reminder that this isn’t the end of the world.”
One day we will all take that flight to meet our Creator, but, as the song so beautifully and hauntingly illustrates, until then we are surrounded by people who love us and help to shield us from harm.
I love the summer! I love the warmth, the sun! What’s not to like?! It’s what we all start working for about 3 months before it hits…trying to shape up so we look good in our beach wear!
Yeah, summertime is my favorite because that’s when I think God opens up His windows to give us a little taste of Heaven!!
